JOB TITLE:  Teacher of the Deaf-Hearing Impaired

 

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal/Special Education Director

 

UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Sunnyside Education Association

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

The Teacher of the Deaf-Hearing Impaired teaches educational subject area materials to deaf/hearing impaired students using various methods of communication to receive and convey language.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:



  1. Determines specific learning problems, skill deficiencies, or social adjustment difficulties of students and initiates remediation programs in these areas.
  2. Supports instruction by providing tutoring for other classes when necessary.
  3. Evaluates each student in terms of initial needs and progress toward remediation.
  4. Prepares progress reports and year-end evaluations, administering pre-tests and post-tests as appropriate and necessary.
  5. Assists the general education teacher in planning curriculum, lesson preparation and modification of instructional materials according to the individual needs of the student(s).
  6. Instructs students in academic subjects using the various forms of communication such as gestures, manual sign systems, finger spelling, and speech cues.
  7. Encourages students to participate through their preferred manual sign system or primary mode of communication in classroom learning experiences in order to ensure comprehension of subject matter.
  8. Provides opportunities for students to explore life, career goals, and encourages ability to communicate in all situation encountered in daily life.
  9. Establishes and maintains standards of individual student behavior.
  10. Work closely with other staff including teachers, counselors and school psychologists to help the students maintain satisfactory class work, homework and behavior.
  11. Meets with parents to keep them apprised of their child’s progress.
  12. Regularly test student’s hearing aids and ensure the hearing aids are functional.
  13. Participates in MDT meetings as necessary.
  14. Prepare grades and progress reports.
  15. Keep current of new developments in the field of special education and deaf-hearing impaired education by reading journals and publications, attending professional society meeting and seminars, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
  16. Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

Daily work will be assigned and supervised by the building principal and/or special services director. Interacts regularly with various support staff, students, parents and other district employees.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The daily work is performed in an office/classroom setting and at various sites within the district.  The job incumbent is often required to: stand or sit for prolonged periods; be exposed to computer display terminal for prolonged periods; and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines.  The incumbent is sometimes required to: be exposed to infectious diseases; and deal with distraught, angry or hostile individuals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

 

Bachelor Degree in Education required

Valid Washington State teaching certificate with special education endorsement required

Knowledge of state essential academic learning requirements and relevant assessments for reading, writing and math.

Licenses/Special Requirements

 

One or more of the following credentials is required:

  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate with endorsement in Special Education
