JOB TITLE: Teacher/Athletic Trainer
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and District Athletic Director

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Athletic Training Teacher instructs students in proper procedures/processes for diagnosing and then treating common sport injuries. The teacher will also have the opportunity to instruct students in a lab setting after school hours and during athletic contests and will administer preventative and rehabilitative treatment plans to student athletes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
- Demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm with a genuine passion for teaching students.
- Facilitate student’s physical, cognitive and social and emotional learning through lessons designed to sequentially develop skills appropriate to their ability and confidence levels.
- Provide engaging, fun and effective instruction that helps build a health/wellness and athletic training foundation for students.
- Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, and/or athletic training utilizing curriculum and other appropriate learning activities.
- Provide maximum participation for all students;differentiates as needed to ensure all students experience success.
- Develops engaging and effective lesson plans and supplementary materials
- Provides ongoing formative feedback to students.
- Supports school-wide programs.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas that supports and aligns with the school-wide framework.
- Maintains control of storage, equipment, locker room, and school property.
- Supervises students in and out of classroom.
- Complies with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
- Effectively use technology to support effective instruction and student learning.
- Actively supports and builds a strong positive culture and learning environment.
- Work cooperatively with team members, parents, community members, and partners to improve the instructional program and student success.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: - Athletic Trainer
- Attend team practices, all home games/matches/tournaments (includes away games for football and potentially post season games) to perform the duties of athletic training including administering first aid and emergency care to injured athletes and students and inspecting playing facilities and equipment to ensure they are free of hazards.
- Set up and tear down for practices and games including, but not limited to: ice, water, med kits, training room.
- Training, scheduling and supervising student trainers for each season.
- Advise coaching staff, student athletic trainers, athletes and parents on the care and prevention of athletic injuries.
- Assist coaching staff in the implementation of the conditioning programs to prevent and reduce occurrence of injury and illness.
- Organize pre-participation physical examinations with school personnel as needed.
- Organize and/or help administer CPR / First Aid trainings for district coaches.
- Evaluate, select, modify and fit prophylactic and protective equipment and other custom devices as prescribed by a physician and/or as needed to prevent and minimize the risk of injury or re-injury.
- Communicate appropriate information (within HIPPA guidelines) to athletes, parents and coaching staff regarding the athlete’s medical status, treatment plan, ability to participate, and assist in the athlete’s functional recovery and return to play, deferring to medical personnel when appropriate.
- Perform assessment of athletes to identify impairments, functional limitations, severity of conditions, and disabilities resulting from injuries or illnesses incurred during athletic participation and determine appropriate treatment plans and when consultation with health care providers is necessary, and refer accordingly.
- Work with treating physicians as appropriate.
- Complete and maintain athletic injury reports for every reported injury during athletic events and practices.
- Maintain the high school athletic training facility and clean, disinfect, and maintain equipment in the athletic training facility.
- Travels to different sites as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
Bachelor degree or higher from an accredited institution.
National Certification as a Certified Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification. (NATA)

Licenses/Special Requirements
Washington State Teaching Certification with appropriate endorsement
Athletic Trainer Certification through the Department of Health Licensing
