JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

JOB TITLE: Substitute Security Liaison

 

REPORTS TO: Safety and Security Specialist

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Position is responsible for promoting and sustaining the safety of students and employees. Position assists the administrative staff with enforcing policies for safe and orderly schools at the building level. Position is a substitute for a daily security liaison or for coverage at District events; including evening and weekend events.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

  1. Monitors the cafeteria, bus areas, hallways, restrooms, gyms, auditorium, sports fields, stadium and other assigned areas of the school building during class hours to deter and control undesirable actions.    
  2. Patrols parking lots and school grounds to detect unauthorized persons or vehicles and to identify any suspicious activities.
  3. Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  4. Supervises and directs pupil movement during class changes.
  5. Identifies, apprehends, and detains unauthorized persons who may be in the building or on school grounds.
  6. Notifies the administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations requiring immediate attention.
  7. Controls disruptive situations on the premises.
  8. Operates hand-held radios during the school day.
  9. Investigates law violations and other disciplinary incidents at school, which may include vandalism, drugs, theft, and major school disturbances.
  10. Works cooperatively with school administrators, security liaisons and law enforcement in handling serious student offenses and law violations.
  11. Assists with fire drills and other crisis responses.
  12. Attends staff development training as directed.
  13. Assists bus coordinators at the assigned school during loading and unloading times.
  14. Maintains security records, logs, and reports.
  15. Monitors and maintains electronic surveillance equipment.
  16. Flag or direct traffic at school entrances and exits.
  17. Other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; ability to articulate verbally for the delivery of communications and instructions in an emergency situation; physical agility and strength to apprehend and detain trespassers or to separate individuals in a fight; visual acuity necessary to observe and monitor students movement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalency) with some experience or training in a security-related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Some related security experience in a public school setting preferred. Completion of some college-level courses in the area of security, crowd management, non-crisis intervention, or law enforcement preferred. Must possess knowledge of, and the ability to practically apply, standard security procedures and practices.  Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School policies and procedures.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

Must possess knowledge of, and the ability to practically apply, standard security procedures and practices.  Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School Board policies and procedures relating to security functions and Student Rights and Responsibilities.  Must possess the ability to maintain accurate security records and reports. Must possess excellent human relations skills. Must have the ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

 

Licenses/Special Requirements

Successfully pass a WSP and FBI background check.

Must possess a valid Washington driver’s license with a good driving record.

Social Security Card.
