JOB TITLE: Groundsperson/Mower/Minor Maintenance II
REPORTS TO: Facilities/Maintenance Director

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The job of Groundsperson/Mower/Minor Maintenance II is to perform routine and basic grounds maintenance and improvement work, including care of lawns, landscaped areas, and play areas and to complete related work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
- Safely operate groundskeeping equipment such as backhoes, skid steers, sweepers, trucks, forklifts, riding mowers, blowers, edgers, aerators, chainsaws, wood chippers, tractors, power sprayers, augers and other related equipment.
- Calibrate, mix and apply herbicides and pesticides to control weeds and insects.
- Perform installation, repair and modification of sprinkler systems; adjust automatic sprinkler controls, control valves and sprinklers.
- Transplant, cultivate, prune, graft, trim, spray and fertilize lawns, plants, shrubs and trees; prepare soil for sowing seeds, planting shrubs and trees.
- Maintain all tools and equipment; clean, grease, perform minor repairs and adjust equipment as needed.
- Water turf areas, ornamental ground covers, shrubs and trees; mow, edge, trim , aerate, dethatch, fertilize, spray and reseed turn areas..
- Rake leaves, grass and clippings; pick up paper and debris; sweep sidewalks, driveways, building entrances and other paved areas.
- Line athletic fields and track; reseed, fertilize, and restore playing fields after sport events and activities.
- Install and repair chain link and other types of fencing.
- Perform rough carpentry in construction of landscape benches, tables and fences; perform concrete work in constructing sidewalks, stepping stones, ramp ways, retaining walls, patios, catch basins, parking lots etc.
- Supervise and/or train student workers or other work crews engaged in ground maintenance work on a project or short-term basis.
- Assist with snow removal as needed
- Assist in the installation, inspection and repair of playground equipment.
- Other related duties as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Read and respond to work related emails as necessary.
- Complete all required training.

Ability to communicate with diverse groups, meet deadlines and schedules; set priorities; physical stamina; and ability to read, write and communicate effectively. Interacts regularly with various custodial staff, members of the community and other district employees. Establish and maintain friendly, cooperative and effective working relationships with persons contacted in the course of work.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting (up to 60 pounds frequently), pushing, and/or pulling including the ability to handle hand truck loads up to 400 pounds, frequent climbing/ descending (ladders up to 20 feet), balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent.
Previous grounds experience is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability is required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.
- Knowledge of principles, procedures, materials, equipment and methods used in caring for plants, shrubs, flowers, trees and lawns.
- Knowledge of specialized maintenance procedures in such areas as weed control and sprinkler system installation.
- Ability to operate a variety of power driven equipment with skill and independence.
- Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Ability to plan work efficiently.
- Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of basic hand tools is required.
- Ability to drive large trucks and/or pickup trucks with trailers.
- Required computer skills include preparation of spreadsheets and database information.
- Ability to check work orders, complete required online training and use computerized record keeping systems.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, check work orders, time sheets, Safe Schools, and Employee Access.
Licenses/Special Requirements
Valid Washington State Drivers license or photo identification.
Social Security Card.
WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.
Clear driving abstract required.
Herbicide spray license or willing to obtain.
