JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:  Head Custodian

 

REPORTS TO: Facilities/Maintenance Coordinator

 

UNIT CLASSIFICATION: PSE Custodial/Minor Maintenance Grounds

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The job of Head Custodian is done for the purpose/s of keeping the building and grounds clean, neat, and orderly.  The Day Custodian assists with minor maintenance of the building and grounds.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

  1. Unlock doors, turn on lights, and disarm alarms.
  2. Administrative services such as incoming mail pickup.  Receiving school supplies and/or equipment, delivering special equipment within the building (may include unloading freight).
  3. Responsible for the proper display and storage of flags.
  4. Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed by principals.
  5. Take out and take down traffic signs daily (if needed).
  6. Set up tables for breakfast and lunch. Take down tables and clean the area following breakfast/lunch.
  7. Vacuum, mop and other general cleaning.
  8. Pick up trash around sidewalks, parking lots and the playground daily.  Empty outside garbage cans on a regular basis.
  9. Check for and report any vandalism inside and outside.
  10. Responsible for perimeter grounds care involving mowing, trimming, care of shrubbery and/or minor repairs to playground equipment and/or outside furniture.
  11. Snow removal, as required, using hand tools or power equipment such as snow blowers and garden type tractors with attachments.
  12. Responsible for cleanup and sanitation of areas involving sick students.
  13. Wash windows weekly, inside and out.
  14. Check emergency lighting fixtures monthly.
  15. Check fire extinguishers monthly.
  16. Check roof drains quarterly.
  17. Replace light bulbs, ballasts, and other parts as needed with appropriate training,
  18. Replace damaged ceiling tile as needed.
  19. Minor repairs to faucets, toilets, sinks and urinals as needed.
  20. Periodic scheduled cleaning of lighting fixtures, walls, windows, furnishings, appliances, whiteboards, bulletin boards, etc.
  21. Repair door problems, handles, latches, loose screws and closers.
  22. Unclog toilets, urinals and drinking fountains as needed.
  23. Follow and execute Custodial standards.
  24. Head custodians will provide training to new custodial staff, teaching them proper cleaning techniques, equipment usage, and safety protocols.
  25. Event coordination.
  26. Assist Event Custodian as needed.
  27. Use and knowledge of all cleaning equipment including riding equipment,  lawn mowers and trimmers.
  28. Use appropriate PPE as needed.
  29. Other related duties as assigned.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  1. Read and respond to work related emails daily.
  2. Complete all required training.Order supplies in a timely manner.
  3. Check HVAC temperatures and change air filters as needed.
  4. Reset clocks and electrical breakers as needed.
  5. Adjust desks and tables and replace glides.
  6. Wash custodial mops and towels and laundry.
  7. Fill water softeners.
  8. Periodic scheduled heavy cleaning and maintenance for all types of flooring including carpeting, gym floors, tile floors, concrete floors, wood floors, etc.
  9. Be trained and train others to use Access Control and Access Control badges.
  10. Lead summer cleaning teams.
  11. Assist with evaluation of the facility.
  12. Identify safety and security concerns.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent.

Previous custodial experience is preferred.

Required computer skills include assessing and responding to email, creating tickets and ordering supplies.

Knowledge of basic hand tools is required.

 

Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid Washington State Drivers license.

Social Security Card.

WSP/FBI fingerprint/background clearance.

Temperature Changes:  Endure variations in temperature that are sufficiently marked and abrupt to cause noticeable bodily reactions occasionally.  The work is primarily indoors, although some outdoor work is required.
