JOB TITLE: Special Education Service Provider Assistant
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Special Education Director
UNIT CLASSIFICATION: PSE Para Educator
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The primary duties of the Special Education Service Provider Assistant under the supervision of a certified staff service provider is the implementation of services for children/students with speech, vision, fine motor, gross motor, cognitive/academic, and hearing impairments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
- Follows oral and written directions, including intervention plans.
- Interacts appropriately with others involved in the student’s program, including the teacher and other personnel.
- Identifies and reports changes in the student or equipment.
- Daily use of a variety of computer programs for intervention and documentation.
- Prepares work area and materials for use including setup of specific equipment.
- Accompanies the student from classroom to service area or prepares classroom for service delivery.
- Implements documented treatment/intervention plans developed by the special education service provider or supervising certificated staff.
- Accurately collects and records subjective and objective data.
- Record student’s status with regard to established objectives as stated in the treatment plan and report this information to the supervising special education service provider or supervising certificated staff.
- Assists the special education service provider or supervising certificated staff in the screening of students.
- Assist the special education service provider or supervising certificated staff in obtaining consent forms.
- Organize and schedule meetings for the supervising special education service provider or supervising certificated staff.
- Accurately input student data into the management system.
- Observation of students in various settings.
- Responsible for conducting individualized testing/assessment of students.
- Collect and distribute assessment/rating forms.
- Maintains and cleans equipment, adhering to infection control protocol.
- Maintains the confidentiality of information pertaining to students and their families.
- Participates in classroom activities as requested by the special education service provider or supervising certificated staff.
- May include playground, cafeteria and general student supervision duties.
- Other related duties as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Engages in various clerical tasks, including filing and copying.
- Participates in conferences with the special education service provider or supervising certificated staff as requested by the principal, special education director, or special education service provider or supervising certificated staff.
- Participates in educational facility trainings and meetings as requested by the special education service provider or supervising certificated staff.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Daily work will be assigned and supervised by special education service provider or supervising certificated staff (?).
Reports to the Building Principal/Special Education Director. Interacts regularly with various support staff, and other district employees.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The daily work is performed in an office/classroom setting and at various sites within the district. The job incumbent is often required to: stand or sit for prolonged periods; be exposed to computer display terminals for prolonged periods; and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. The incumbent is sometimes required to: be exposed to infectious diseases; and deal with distraught, angry or hostile individuals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful job incumbents will demonstrate a level of knowledge, skills and abilities as listed below.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Pass State Assessment for Para Educators; or
Associate Degree or higher; or
72-quarter college credits or 48-semester credits at the one hundred level or higher; or
Completed an apprenticeship as a para educator, in a program
registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training
Council.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral communication skills in both English and Spanish preferred.
- Sensitivity to cultural and language differences.
- Ability to work with students individually and in groups.
- Respects and appropriately considers age, gender, cultural/linguistic background and related factors when providing services.
- Ability to pay close attention to visual and auditory detail.
- Ability to work with students and adults in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Knowledge of speech language pathology equipment, vision support equipment/technology, materials and procedures preferred.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to discriminate and produce a wide range of speech sounds.
- Able to pass a screening of basic communication skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability, as the job combines direct intervention, classroom work, equipment/materials maintenance and clerical responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Ability to demonstrate patience and flexibility in providing a variety of practice activities to students who need encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- May require the ability to produce accurate documents using word processing, spreadsheet and database software on both Macintosh and PC computers.
Licenses/Special Requirements
One or more of the following credentials is preferred:
- Associate’s degree from a speech language pathology assistant program recognized by ASHA; or
- Bachelor’s degree; or
- Completion of a college based speech language pathology assistant certificate
Valid Washington State Drivers license or photo identification.
